Health Certificates

A health certificate is documentation that your pet meets the requirements to travel either domestically or internationally. The requirements for international travel for pets vary by country.

If you are planning a trip with your pet, be sure to visit the USDA website for requirements for pet travel by country.

We recommend you contact your airline and destination country’s embassy (if applicable) for their specific requirements.

Please see below for more information on domestic and international health certificates.

  • Certificate is valid for 30 days if driving, only 10 days if flying. Certain destinations considered domestic (e.g Hawaii) may have requirements other than a domestic health certificate, please be sure to be aware of this and plan accordingly.

  • Occoquan Animal Hospital has accredited veterinarians on staff able to provide international health certificates and utilize the online USDA Veterinary Export Health Certification System (VEHCS), if required by the country you and/or your pet is traveling to. Please call us in advance so we can ensure an accredited doctor is available for your visit.

Each country has specific guidelines and requirements for the import of personal pets. If these requirements are not met, it may delay or prevent your pet’s acceptance into the country. We strongly recommend visiting the USDA APHIS website (linked above) for pet travel and reviewing the requirements for the country you and/or your pet is traveling to.
